Selfless Kids Raise Money for Bed Nets!

I read this today on the Malaria No More website and was struck by the selflessness of these kids. Thought I would share it.

Boys and Girls Club of the Gulf Coast: Malaria No More Walk for Kids

Malaria No More Walk for Kids

In an inspiring act of compassion, kids from the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast Pass Christian Unit paid tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by sponsoring a "Malaria No More" Walk for Kids to raise funds to purchase bed nets for children in Africa. The Pass Club kids, living in FEMA trailers after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, raise $950 on behalf of Malaria No More. When asked why the clubs scheduled the Malaria Walk on Martin Luther King Day, Jackie McGee, Pass Christian Club Director said, "I wanted the kids to experience having the initiative to help someone else ... it was a holiday for us and I wanted it to be a 'day on' on our 'day off' ... to feel compassion for others. It was a walk for kids, all kids." Thirteen year old Kiarra Dedeaux referring to children effected by malaria, added, "We don't need any children dead from a disease; those kids want to reach their goals just like we do."
